Natural History of Granite

Granite is a type of igneous rock that was formed millions of years ago beneath the earth's surface after magma cooled and turned into solid rock. This rock is filled with different colored crystals such as pink, white, black and beige which are really mixtures of quartz, feldspar and mica. Because of this mixture of components, the granite slabs you may see during your counter shopping may be a variety of hues, striation patterns and flecks.

If you want to know all about granite kitchen counters in Del Mar, other parts of California and beyond, you will discover there are two basic sizes sold. The 2cm slabs of granite fashioned into counters had long been the norm but the trend now is leaning toward 3cm granite slabs. The reason is because the 3cm size is more substantial and less prone to odd breakage during the transportation and installation process.

Another reason why the 2 cm size is falling out of favor is because of the extra granite fabrication process. With 2 cm granite, there is a sub-layer of plywood covers by strips of stone to give the appearance that the counter is thicker. This plywood and stone strips adds to the cost and length of the fabrication process while the 3 cm saves money by bypassing the plywood step.

Busting the Myth surrounding Granite Counters

One of the biggest myths surrounding granite countertops is how difficult it is to take care of. When the granite is sealed by a permanent lifelong sealant, nothing is going to penetrate it unless you decide to blow it up! This means, you cannot stain it or scratch it and you do not have to reapply sealer every other year.

Heat does not bother granite either. After all, it was heat and pressure that formed this almost diamond hard rock. As long as you wipe your countertops as you would any other type, bacteria and other microscopic beasties will not find safe harbor on them.

Now that several so-called complaints surrounding granite have been busted, the only other complaint against it has been the price. Well guess what! Granite is becoming quite affordable these days as it is more readily available. And because it is not viewed as an exclusive wealthy person's material, it is more attainable to the every day person. It is still an investment but the granite is worth it. By not having to expend extra money and maintenance as you would on others, you would actually be coming out ahead! Granite kitchen counters are unique and definitely have the power to transform a ho-hum room into one that sparkles with new life.
