What Do You Look for in a Countertop?

Shopping for countertops, what exactly are you looking for? Is it just about the price tag or the right color? If that is the case, you are going about the process all wrong! Something worthy is not going to be cheap like plastic laminate or ceramic tile that you can install yourself. Sure, they have plenty of colors and styles to choose from but you won't be happy the first time you get a dent, chip, scratch or burn mark.

With granite, kitchen countertops will truly shine and they are quite sturdy, able to withstand virtually anything you throw at it. You can place hot pans on the surface without worrying about burn marks. Use the granite surface as a cutting board if you want to – of course, the surface is so hard and durable, your knives will dull. Prepare your bread dough or pizza on the granite – no butcher block needed for protection. Bacteria do not linger around once you clean up your messes.

Because granite is almost as hard as diamonds, you don't really have to worry about chipping or scratching the surface. With the right permanent sealant over the surface, you never have to take the time to reseal the surface to maintain its stain or bacteria resistance. Custom countertops made from granite, when installed professionally, fit neatly and you will not be able to detect any seams at first, second, or even third glance.

Your Options Other Than Granite

Plastic laminate comes in a number of colors and styles but is highly susceptible to scratches, burns, dents and even fading. Solid engineered surfaces do fair much better with stain and heat resistance but you do have to buff out scratches when they occur and the solid surface costs just about as much as granite! Glass, stainless steel, wood, concrete and soapstone …. They all have their pluses and minuses with varying price tags but you are not going to get the same protection and value as granite.

Granite is nature's product, an igneous rock created when magma formed under the earth's crust and then cooled over millions of years. Comprised of mica, feldspar and quartz, granite offers a variety of colors and hues and the speckles and striations of the minerals inside are simply stunning. This rock is collected from quarries and formed into rough blocks. Once fabricators get their hands on them, they are fashioned into slabs that can then be formed into a variety of things like countertops. Unless you are in the habit of dropping sledgehammers on your kitchen counters, your granite surface will last for generations. Do yourself a favor and bypass all the other counter options and go straight for the granite kitchen countertops.
