The project, completed by Rock-It Surfaces in Carlsbad, centered on a customer's desire to refresh and brighten their kitchen without undergoing a full remodel. The existing cabinets and flooring were to remain, setting a specific challenge for material selection. The customer chose Taj Mahal Quartzite, a natural stone known for its elegant, creamy tones, which was specifically selected to coordinate seamlessly with the existing color palette of the room.
The scope of work included the installation of new kitchen countertops and a full-height backsplash, totaling 115 square feet of stone. The choice of Taj Mahal Quartzite successfully met the goal of brightening the space. Due to the dimensions of the island, a necessary seam was incorporated during installation, though it was strategically placed to be minimally visible to residents and guests.

Yes. Quartzite is one of the most durable natural stones used in kitchens. It ranks high on the Mohs hardness scale—typically between 7 and 8—meaning it resists everyday wear, light scratching, and heavy use exceptionally well. It also performs well near heat sources and maintains its structure even in high-traffic homes.
Quartzite is a porous natural stone, so sealing is recommended to help protect it from absorbing spills or staining agents. The specific sealing schedule can vary based on the fabricator’s process and the individual stone, so homeowners should follow their installer’s recommendations rather than a fixed timeline.
Quartzite has excellent scratch resistance due to its hardness, and light knife contact typically will not damage it—though cutting boards are still recommended. Like all natural stone surfaces, it can chip along exposed edges if struck with enough force, but professional repair services can usually address chips or minor damage effectively.
